چکیده

In [1], the authors present a novel tool to establish achievability results in network information theoretic problems. The main idea is to study a set of discrete memoryless correlated sources, and the ensuing statistics of the bin indices resulting from random binning of the sources. Sufficient conditions are established on rates of random binning such that these indices are mutually independent and uniformly distributed. In conjunction with the Slepian-Wolf result, such a characterization allows for a new framework to prove achievability in both rate-distortion and channel coding problems. In this paper, we study the main techniques employed in [1], which we then apply to rederive several known results such as Marton’s inner bound for broadcast channels, Gelfand-Pinsker theorem, Wyner-Ziv theorem, BergerTung inner bound etc. While this framework is not fundamentally different from the one involving typicality arguments, it presents a unified view of achievability, and is particularly useful in problems of secrecy and coordination.

An Achievable Rate Region for a Two-Relay Network with Receiver-Transmitter Feedback

We consider a relay network with two relays and a feedback link from the receiver to the sender. To obtain the achievability result, we use compress-and-forward and random binning techniques combined with deterministic binning and restricted decoding. Moreover, we use joint decoding technique to decode the relays’ compressed information to achieve a higher rate in the receiver. Keywordsrelay ne...

On Achievable Rates for Channels with Mismatched Decoding

The problem of mismatched decoding for discrete memoryless channels is addressed. A mismatched cognitive multiple-access channel is introduced, and an inner bound on its capacity region is derived using two alternative encoding methods: superposition coding and random binning. The inner bounds are derived by analyzing the average error probability of the code ensemble for both methods and by a ...

Achievable Rates for a Two-Relay Network with Relays-Transmitter Feedbacks

We consider a relay network with two relays and two feedback links from the relays to the sender. To obtain the achievability results, we use the compress-and-forward and the decode-and-forward strategies to superimpose facility and cooperation analogue to what proposed by Cover and El Gamal for a relay channel. In addition to random binning, we use deterministic binning to perform restricted d...

On Binary Distributed Hypothesis Testing

We consider the problem of distributed binary hypothesis testing of two sequences that are generated by an i.i.d. doubly-binary symmetric source. Each sequence is observed by a different terminal. The two hypotheses correspond to different levels of correlation between the two source components, i.e., the crossover probability between the two. The terminals communicate with a decision function ...

Message communications and channel state estimation for state dependent channels

In this paper, we consider the problem of pure information transmission and channel state estimation via state dependent channels. We show that the knowledge of auxiliary random variable, used in the codebook construction of random binning techniques, is sufficient to perform the optimal channel state estimation. We compare the obtained results with optimal rate-distortion region obtained using...
